What kind of watch this is
Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon built a town where the prison is the economy, and the only way to keep the lights on is to manage the chaos inside it. Jeremy Renner plays the son who steps into the family business, mediating between gangs, guards, and politicians in a place that has forgotten what peace looks like. The tone is heavy, slow-burning, and deeply local, focusing on the specific rot of a community that profits from confinement. With 5 seasons and 48 episodes, the total watch time is roughly 41 hours. It demands patience, but the payoff is a grim, unflinching look at who gets to decide who stays and who goes.
What the critics said
Season 1 landed with a thud. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 33%, averaging 5.6 out of 10. The consensus notes the show has a strong pedigree but offers too much gloom and not enough reason to care. Metacritic assigns 54, filing it under mixed or average. Season 2 improved slightly, reaching 50% approval. By Season 3, the score jumped to 78%. Season 4 hit 100%, based on 5 reviews. The trajectory is upward, if the early seasons were a rough draft.
