What kind of watch this is

Robert Stevenson directed this 139-minute fantasy about a magical nanny who employs music and adventure to help two neglected children become closer to their father. Julie Andrews plays the title role with a stillness that feels more like gravity than magic. The film relies on the idea that music can solve structural problems in a household. It is a dry look at how much effort it takes to keep a fantasy alive in a real city.

What the critics said

The critical consensus is warm. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 97% approval rating as of January 2026, alongside an average score of 8.4/10 from October 2021. Metacritic’s metascore sits at 88 out of 100 as of January 2026, a figure that signals universal acclaim. Whitney Williams of Variety singled out the musical sequences and the lead performances for praise. Bosley Crowther of The New York Times called it a "most wonderful, cheering movie." Ann Guerin of Life offered a counterpoint, suggesting the film’s creative departures from the novels needed a bit more restraint. It is a rare film that satisfies both the child and the critic, which is a harder trick than the ceiling tea party.

How it did with audiences

Mary Poppins cost $6 million to make and returned a total lifetime rental of $45 million to Disney from a gross of over $102 million. That margin helped Walt Disney buy land in central Florida and finance Walt Disney World. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. In the United Kingdom, it drew 14 million admissions, landing it as the 20th most popular sound film of the 20th century. Audiences kept coming back; the film ran for 32 weeks in the top 12 in the U.S. Money usually moves one way. Here, it moved toward Orlando.

Awards

The film swept 5 of its 12 Academy Award nominations in 1965. Julie Andrews won Best Actress, while Cotton Warburton, Richard M. Sherman, and Peter Ellenshaw took home the technical categories. The Best Original Song award went to "Chim Chim Cher-ee." The rest of the nominations went to the other side, as is customary.

Where it left its mark

Walt Disney’s crowning achievement, a verdict that stuck. It remains the only Disney film to earn a Best Picture nomination during his lifetime. The profits helped build the Walt Disney World Monorail System, where safety devices are still marked MAPO, a nod to the source material. P.L. Travers, the original author, never agreed to another adaptation. She was so unhappy with the film's production that when a stage musical emerged in the 1990s, she required English-born writers and banned anyone from the movie production. The film left its mark on Disney's infrastructure, and its scars on the author.
