What kind of watch this is

Agent Carter places a 1946 spy thriller in the shadow of a superhero origin story. The hook is the friction between Peggy’s competence and a world that insists she is merely administrative staff. She spends her days filing papers for the Strategic Scientific Reserve and her nights dismantling conspiracies for Howard Stark. It is a period drama where the wardrobe is sharp and the threats are atomic. With 18 episodes across 2 seasons, the total runtime is 13 hours. It asks you to suspend disbelief for a while, then rewards you with a lead who never apologizes for being better at the job than the men around her.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season a 98% approval rating, averaging 7.9 out of 10 across 48 reviews. The consensus calls it a "winning, stylish drama" that prioritizes Peggy Carter as a person before she becomes an action hero. The second season drops to 76% with an 8/10 average from 21 reviews. Critics note the move to Hollywood offers new territory, though the show continues searching for a storyline as dynamic as its heroine. Metacritic lands on 72 out of 100 for the series overall, labeling the reception generally favorable. It is a high score for a show that spends its time thinking about its protagonist.

How it did with audiences

TMDB users give it a 7.5 out of 10. There is no box office data. The real story is the friction. Maureen Ryan of Variety blamed low viewership on scheduling decisions by then ABC president Paul Lee. The rollout was messy, with a changed premiere date and a full first season available only days before season two began. It was a hard sell for new viewers.

What came next for the cast

Hayley Atwell moved from Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Avengers: Endgame, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. James D'Arcy traded Cloud Atlas and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World for Avengers: Endgame, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer. Chad Michael Murray swapped Freaky Friday and House of Wax for Riverdale, Freakier Friday, and Fortress. The credits list what followed. They do not prove Agent Carter caused it.
