What kind of watch this is

Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film looks like a fashion magazine that accidentally got access to the French court. It runs 123 minutes, which is plenty of time to watch Kirsten Dunst consume sugar and Jason Schwartzman look confused. The tone is opulent, detached, and strangely modern, treating the fall of Versailles as a lifestyle crisis rather than a political one. It is a portrait of boredom dressed in silk, where the revolution feels less like a threat and more like a bad review.

What the critics said

The scores land in the middle, which is where ambivalence usually sits. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 57% as of November 2024, while Metacritic offers a 64/100 Metascore from October 2025. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 6.1/10, reported in October 2021. IMDb’s weighted average sits at 6.5/10 as of June 2026.

Reception was mixed. Roger Ebert noted that only a couple of journalists booed at Cannes, a fact the media later inflated. He argued the reaction was often about political discomfort rather than quality.

What came next for the cast

The credits after 2006 do not map neatly to a single cause. Kirsten Dunst returned to Spider-Man, then pivoted to Hidden Figures. Jason Schwartzman’s path led through The Grand Budapest Hotel, while Steve Coogan found himself in family blockbusters. The timeline is a blur of genres. It is a reminder that a role is a door, not a destination.
