Critics were lukewarm. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 63% as of 2025, which is polite enough. Metacritic lands on 57, a score that usually means "it works, mostly." The consensus is that the atmosphere holds up even if the plot wobbles. Richard Roeper called it a ride he’d take again, provided you don’t mind the leftover sequel bait. The Philadelphia Inquirer saw a fairy tale with a spectral edge, noting the sepia-toned flashbacks. It is a ghost story that knows exactly how to dress up its borrowed scares.
What came next for the cast
Jessica Chastain moved from The Help and Zero Dark Thirty into Interstellar and The Martian. That is a steep climb. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau traded Game of Thrones fame for The Flash and Gods of Egypt. The credits do not say Mama caused either shift. They simply list what followed. Megan Charpentier went from Jennifer’s Body to It. Sometimes a career is a long corridor with interesting doors.
