What kind of watch this is
Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 action-adventure film directed by George Miller. It runs 121 minutes, which is roughly the time it takes to drive across a desert when you are not trying to be killed. The premise involves two rebels running through a broken world, but the real story is about a chase that never stops. It is for anyone who prefers their adrenaline delivered in a straight line rather than a plot twist. The desert does not care about your opinions.
What the critics said
Critics didn’t just like it; they leaned in. Rotten Tomatoes reports 97% positive reviews, a figure that stands alongside Metacritic’s 90/100 Metascore. That is universal acclaim, not just approval. Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph called it a "Krakatoan eruption of craziness," while Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian found it "entirely over the top." Mick LaSalle was the outlier, finding the chase "long" and "dull." Most didn’t.
How it did with audiences
Budgeted at $150 million, the film took in $154 million in the United States and $376 million worldwide. That is a gross profit, though The Hollywood Reporter later calculated a net loss of $20–40 million. Audiences, however, did not read that fine print. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. IMDb gives it an 8.1 out of 10 as of April 2026.
Awards
The film took 16 awards from 20 nominations. At the 2016 Academy Awards, it won for Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Editing, Sound, and Production Design. The 2015 AACTAs added Best Film, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Production Design. It also took the National Board of Review’s Best Film award and the FIPRESCI Grand Prix.
What came next for the cast
Tom Hardy moved from Inception and The Dark Knight Rises into Dunkirk and the Venom franchise. Charlize Theron left Prometheus and Hancock to join The Fate of the Furious and F9. Nicholas Hoult stayed in the X-Men universe for Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix before landing The Menu. These are just the next steps. The film did not cause them; the calendar did.
