What the critics said
Critics found it funnier than it has a right to be. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 93% approval rating as of July 2023. Metacritic sits at 72 out of 100, a score that signals generally favorable reviews. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman called it "a diverting genre film" with a healthy sense of its own absurdity. Not everyone bought the camp. The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey called it "totally mean-spirited," which is either high praise or a warning label, depending on your taste for horror-comedies.
How it did with audiences
M3GAN cost $12 million and took in $181.8 million worldwide, a figure that Deadline Hollywood says nets $78.8 million in profit. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. The robot doll out-earned its opening weekend projections.
What came next for the cast
Allison Williams stepped into M3GAN after Get Out and The Perfection. She returned for M3GAN 2.0 and appeared in Regretting You. Violet McGraw had already worked on Black Widow and Doctor Sleep. Her post-2022 slate includes Thunderbolts, M3GAN 2.0, and The Life of Chuck. Amie Donald joined the cast following Sweet Tooth. She also returned for the sequel. The film did not cause these shifts. It simply marked a point on the timeline.
