M*A*S*H (1972)
Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen.
The 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital is stuck in the middle of the Korean war. With little help from the circumstances they find themselves in, they are forced to make their own fun. Fond of practical jokes and revenge, the doctors, nurses, administrators, and soldiers often find ways of making wartime life bearable.

What kind of watch this is
MAS*H leans on a simple engine: 11 seasons, 251 episodes, and 105 hours of doctors swapping insults while the Korean War burns in the background. It is a sitcom that remembers people die. The tone shifts from silly to sobering without warning. Larry Gelbart built an ensemble that treats the Cold War as a joke that occasionally stops being funny. That duality is the hook. You are not watching for the gags; you are watching to see how much pain the humor can absorb before it breaks. It is a long commitment, but the letters home do the heavy lifting.
How it did with audiences
The box office ledger is empty, so we lean on what people actually thought. On TMDB, users give MAS*H a 7.9 out of 10. That is a solid score for a war film that spends half its runtime on slapstick and the other half on a barbershop quartet. Viewers seem to have liked the mix, or at least they did not walk out during the surgery scenes.
