What kind of watch this is
Luc Besson directs this 89-minute action thriller, which treats the "10% of the brain" myth as a literal plot point rather than a bar conversation. Scarlett Johansson’s character transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. The film is a physics experiment with a plot, testing how fast a human body can move before it breaks. It does not pause for exposition. It does not pause for anything.
What the critics said
Critics found the film entertaining, if a bit silly. Rotten Tomatoes holds a 66% approval rating as of March 2024, while Metacritic gives it a 62 out of 100, a score that signals generally favorable reviews. The reception was split between praise for the lead and groans at the logic. Justin Chang of Variety called it "a slickly engineered showcase for a kickass heroine." Christopher Orr of The Atlantic was less kind, labeling it "so idiotic that the only way to properly convey its flaws is to enumerate them." The consensus says the movie powers through its gaps with cheesy thrills.
How it did with audiences
It cost $40 million and made $463 million worldwide. That is a 11.5x return, which makes the math easy. In the United States, it pulled in $127 million. China added $45 million, and France contributed $44 million. On TMDB, users rate it 6.5 out of 10. The score is middling, but the bank account is not.
