USA Today called the debut nearly as strong as Stranger Things, though it needed tweaks to clear the hurdle between good and great. IGN praised the trauma portrayal and visual effects but found the tension inconsistent. Polygon took a dimmer view, arguing the show prioritized coming-of-age drama over the horror that defined the comic. The series generally earned praise for its handling of loss and its visual design. Jackson Robert Scott and Laysla De Oliveira drew particular acclaim. The middle season climbed to 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the third dropped to 55%. It is a show that knows its own limits, which is a start.
