What kind of watch this is
Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation runs 135 minutes. It treats the sisters’ coming-of-age in the aftermath of the Civil War as a puzzle. The film leans into the romance and drama of the setting. Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, and Florence Pugh anchor the cast. It is a film that respects its source material enough to break its own rules.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 95% approval rating as of July 2023, while Metacritic sits at 91 out of 100 as of August 2025. That is high praise for a period drama. Kate Erbland of IndieWire appreciated the "ambitious elliptical storytelling." Anthony Lane of The New Yorker went further, suggesting it "may just be the best film yet made by an American woman." Not everyone bought the timeline. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle found the characters "snooty," a judgment that stuck despite his praise for the direction.
How it did with audiences
Budgeted at $40 million, the film took in $108 million in the United States and $219 million worldwide. Deadline Hollywood calculated a net profit of $56 million in April 2020. TMDB users give it a 7.8/10, and IMDb holds a 7.8/10 weighted average as of March 2026. It opened to $29.2 million over its five-day Christmas period, finishing fourth.
What came next for the cast
Saoirse Ronan had already starred in Lady Bird, while Florence Pugh was fresh from Outlaw King. Eliza Scanlen entered from a single TV credit in Sharp Objects. After 2019, Ronan appeared in Ammonite and The French Dispatch. Pugh moved into Black Widow and Oppenheimer. Scanlen joined Old. The credits do not claim Little Women launched them. They just list what followed.
