What kind of watch this is

Little Miss Sunshine is a 2006 comedy drama that swaps the predictable tearjerker for a van full of people who are actively trying to kill each other. It runs 102 minutes, which is long enough for the Hoover family to exhaust every possible way to ruin a road trip. The hook is not the pageant. It is the specific, suffocating weight of being stuck in traffic with your own relatives. The tagline calls them a family on the verge of a breakdown, which is an understatement. They are already there.

What the critics said

Critics mostly agreed on the charm. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 91% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, with an average rating of 7.8/10. Metacritic gives it 80/100, which signals generally favorable reception. The consensus praises the ensemble cast and the script. Michael Medved called it "one of the very best films of the year." Not everyone was so generous. Owen Gleiberman gave it a 'C', finding the characters to be "walking, talking catalogs of screenwriter index-card data." It is a film that asks you to enjoy the chaos, even if the chaos feels a bit manufactured.

How it did with audiences

It started in just 7 theaters, a modest start for a film that would eventually break 100 million dollars worldwide. The budget was only 8 million, so the math works out to a comfortable profit. For its first 21 days, it held the highest per-theater average gross in the United States, a record it kept until a 3D nature documentary outshone it. By its fifth week, it hit third place, a surprisingly high climb for a movie about a dysfunctional family driving a minivan. On TMDB, users give it a 7.7, a solid score for a film that asks you to like people who are difficult to like.

Awards

Michael Arndt and Alan Arkin won Oscars in 2007 for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. The film also took home the César for Best Foreign Film, the Deauville Grand Prix, and a spot on the National Board of Review’s Top Ten list. That is 5 wins against 3 nominations, a ratio that defies standard arithmetic but not Hollywood enthusiasm.

What came next for the cast

Steve Carell moved from Bruce Almighty and The 40 Year-Old Virgin to Crazy, Stupid, Love. and The Big Short. Paul Dano shifted from The Girl Next Door to 12 Years a Slave and Prisoners. Toni Collette left The Sixth Sense behind for Hereditary and Knives Out. The timeline lists what followed. It does not prove the film caused any of it.
