What kind of watch this is

Lights Out is an 81-minute horror mystery where the darkness is not just an absence of light, but a literal predator. David F. Sandberg directs it with a focus on the psychological weight of a mother’s mental illness, blurring the line between genuine supernatural threat and familial trauma. The tagline, "You were right to be afraid of the dark," does the heavy lifting here. It is a tight, efficient scare machine that respects the audience's intelligence by making the protagonist a skeptic who has to prove her own sanity. The runtime is short enough to keep the tension from sagging, yet long enough to let the dread settle in your bones. It works because the fear feels personal, not just loud.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 76% as of October 2021. That is high enough to suggest competence, low enough to admit the script had gaps. Metacritic lands on 58, which it files under mixed. The critical consensus praises the "terrific performances" and "superior chills." Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times called it a visceral experience that gave him the chills. Not everyone felt that way. Rex Reed of Observer found the "gotcha" factor wore out fast.

How it did with audiences

Lights Out cost $5 million to make and took in $148 million worldwide. That is a ratio that makes accountants smile, even if the horror fans on TMDB, who rate it 6.4, are a bit more reserved. It opened at third place in North America, trailing Star Trek Beyond and The Secret Life of Pets, but it still found a way to turn a modest budget into a very loud profit. The math works out, which is the only kind of ghost story that truly pays the bills.

What came next for the cast

Gabriel Bateman moved from Annabelle to The Fabelmans. That is a steep climb. Teresa Palmer traded zombie romances for The Fall Guy. Maria Bello kept showing up, from Prisoners to BEEF. The credits list what happened next. They do not prove Lights Out did it.
