In early 20th-century Montana, Col. William Ludlow lives on a ranch in the wilderness with his sons, Alfred, Tristan, and Samuel. What kind of watch this is
Edward Zwick directs a 133-minute saga. Anthony Hopkins plays a colonel. The film treats the landscape as a character that refuses to let you look away. It is a story about how a family holds together until the moment it cannot. The tagline promises a legend begins after a fall from innocence, which is a fair warning. It is a long way to get there, but the ground is solid.
What the critics said
The critics found themselves divided, a common fate for films with big ambitions. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 59% Tomatometer score as of August 2024. Metacritic is less forgiving, assigning a 45 Metascore as of August 2025. That lands in the mixed or average category. Roger Ebert called it "pretty good," noting the heartfelt melodrama. Peter Travers agreed that Brad Pitt "carries the picture." Not everyone bought the epic sweep. Rita Kempley felt the yarn sprawled rather than swept. The plot tried to do too much, a problem some suggested a miniseries would have handled better.
What came next for the cast
Brad Pitt arrived from True Romance and left for Se7en. Anthony Hopkins came off The Silence of the Lambs and eventually took a hammer to a god. Aidan Quinn moved from The Mission to Practical Magic. The credits do not prove the film caused these shifts. They merely map the terrain that followed.
