Late Fame (2026)
At the very end of the 1970s, post office worker Ed Saxberger wrote a book of poetry that nobody cared about. After an eager and flattering fan appears on his doorstep, Saxberger is beckoned into a coterie of young admirers who anoint him a rediscovered genius. The group of downtown bohemians is led by their "tragic heroine," Gloria. Intoxicated by the attention, and Gloria's alluring presence, Saxberger gradually reckons with the authenticity of his newfound poetic circle.

What kind of watch this is
Late Fame is a 97-minute drama directed by Kent Jones, starring Willem Dafoe as a post office worker whose quiet poetry suddenly attracts a bohemian crowd. The hook is the slow, uncomfortable shift from obscurity to adulation, anchored by Greta Lee’s Gloria, the group’s self-appointed tragic center. It tracks how a man begins to doubt the authenticity of his own success once he is celebrated for it. The tone is dry and observational, focused on the hollow echo of sudden fame rather than the poetry itself. It is a study in how easily a life can be rewritten by people who need it to be something else.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 94% approval rating based on 108 reviews, an average of 6.6 out of 10. The consensus calls it a gentle rumination on art and authenticity, made lively by Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee’s wonderfully complementary performances.
Kyle Smith in the Wall Street Journal called the film "like a wonderful little poem," noting it gracefully intertwines aspects of Metropolitan and Dead Poets Society. That comparison lands softly.
