What kind of watch this is
Eli Roth’s 2015 thriller relies on a single, static setting: a house where a man is left alone. The premise is simple enough to fit in a text message, but the execution leans into a slow, suffocating tension rather than jump scares. It is 99 minutes long, a duration that feels longer when the only variable is who holds the power at any given second. The film trades in discomfort, asking you to sit with the dread of a situation that starts polite and ends ugly. It is not a traditional horror movie; it is a stress test for your patience.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 37% as of November 2024, with an average review score of 4.9 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 53 out of 100, a score it labels as mixed or average. The consensus notes the film brings talent to bear on torture horror, but fails to overcome its repetitive story. Dread Central gave it 4 out of 5, calling it a home invasion film for the social media generation. Jeff Bond of Geek Monthly praised Reeves' turn, saying it helps make the movie easily Roth's best work.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $10 million. The box office came in at $6 million. That is a loss, by any accounting standard. On TMDB, users rate it 5.4 out of 10. It is a film that exists, which is the only metric the marketing team could honestly defend.
What came next for the cast
For Keanu Reeves, the pattern is familiar. He stepped into the role having just delivered John Wick, and then kept going. Three more sequels followed. The credits do not claim the thriller started that streak, only that it sat inside it. Meanwhile, Ana de Armas arrived with a single early feature to her name. Afterward came Blade Runner 2049, Knives Out, and a Bond film. That is a steep climb, though the hallway was certainly busy.
