Knight Rider (1982)

Michael Knight is today's hero! Driving the car of tomorrow! Together, they're the ultimate crimecrashers!

Michael Long, an undercover police officer, is shot while investigating a case and left for dead by his assailants. He is rescued by Wilton Knight, a wealthy, dying millionaire and inventor who arranges life-saving surgery, including a new face and a new identity--that of Michael Knight. Michael is then given a special computerized and indestructible car called the Knight Industries Two Thousand (nicknamed KITT), and a mission: apprehend criminals who are beyond the reach of the law. The series depicts Michael's exploits as he and KITT battle the forces of evil on behalf of the Foundation for Law and Government.

What kind of watch this is

Knight Rider runs on a simple engine: a man who died and a car that won’t let him. David Hasselhoff plays Michael Knight, a new identity for a dying cop, while William Daniels voices KITT, a smart, unkillable vehicle. The premise is thin, but the tone is thick. It is 67 hours of neon-lit action where the hero solves crimes with a talking machine and a lot of style. It does not ask for your respect. It asks for your volume knob.

What the critics said

Critics panned it initially. Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season 33%, averaging 5.60 out of 10, based mainly on archived contemporaneous reviews. The consensus calls the concept "tiresomely silly." Tom Shales of The Washington Post argued the show is "all revved up but has no place to go." Time changed the tune. Marc Bernardin of Entertainment Weekly later called it "a relic from a simpler time.

How it did with audiences

The studio did not report a budget or box office total, so we skip the arithmetic that usually defines a hit. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. That is a solid score. It suggests viewers liked the premise enough to keep the engine running.
