Critics leaned hard into the praise. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 93% approval rating from 473 reviews as of May 2024. Metacritic assigned a weighted average of 89 out of 100 in April 2024, citing universal acclaim. The consensus called it a sobering appraisal of America’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. Brian Tallerico gave it 4 stars, comparing the structure to a puzzle that reveals the wolves. Peter Debruge found the runtime demanding, noting it keeps going until everyone is dead or behind bars. That is a lot of dying to watch, but the tension holds.
How it did with audiences
The production cost $200 million. It earned $68.1 million in the United States and Canada, plus $90.7 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $158.8 million. Variety noted a traditional break-even point sits between $500 and $600 million. Deadline reported the theatrical run fell about $20 million short of covering marketing, though home rentals offset that. Apple insisted the film was profitable.
TMDB users rate it 7.4 out of 10. IMDb gives it a 7.5/10 as of May 2026. The numbers suggest audiences enjoyed the ride, even if the accounting left Apple with a bruised ledger.
What came next for the cast
DiCaprio arrived from Inception and Django Unchained, then pivoted to One Battle After Another. De Niro stepped out of Joker and GoodFellas into a trio: The Whisper Man, Zero Day, and The Alto Knights. Plemons, fresh from Breaking Bad and The Irishman, landed in Bugonia, Kinds of Kindness, and Zero Day. The credits cannot say this film caused that. They can only say what came next.
