What kind of watch this is

Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 action crime film runs 118 minutes and centers on a high schooler who decides to become a superhero despite having no powers, training, or meaningful reason to do so. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the would-be vigilante, while Chloë Grace Moretz and Nicolas Cage appear as a daughter and her father. The film does not treat the premise as a joke to be resolved, but as a chaotic reality to be endured. It is a loud, kinetic take on the genre that refuses to apologize for its own absurdity.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 77% approval rating, based on 264 reviews as of June 2024. Metacritic lands on a 66, which it labels generally favorable. The consensus leans on the film’s audacity and bloody style. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it an "explosion in a bad taste factory." Not everyone applauded. Roger Ebert gave it 1 star, calling it morally reprehensible. He was not the only one to wince.

How it did with audiences

Kick-Ass cost $30 million and earned $96 million worldwide, a margin that suggests the studio got the math right while the critics were still deciding if a teenager with a baseball bat was a viable action hero. On TMDB, users rate it 7.1 out of 10.
