What kind of watch this is

Andrew Stanton directs John Carter, a 132-minute science fiction adventure where a war-weary captain wakes up on Mars. The premise is simple: he lands on Barsoom, a dying world, and realizes its survival rests in his hands. It is a film about a man who lost his place on Earth and found a new one by saving a planet that does not exist. The tone is earnest, grounded in the physicality of a man who has forgotten how to be human. It asks you to believe in a dusty red rock. That is a tall order for a Tuesday night.

What the critics said

Disney lifted the review embargo one week before release, a move that felt like a preemptive strike. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 52% as of August 2024, while Metacritic rests at 51 as of November 2024. Critics divided on the spectacle. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called it "derivative but charming." Peter Debruge of Variety, less kind, asked where the sense of wonder went. The consensus acknowledges the visuals but questions the pacing.

How it did with audiences

It cost $250 million and grossed $284 million. In box office math, that gap is a loss. Disney took a $200 million writedown within two weeks, citing the film's performance. The studio’s production and marketing costs hit $350 million, a figure that made breaking even look like a distant fantasy. Analysts predicted failure before the premiere. The final accounting confirmed their pessimism. A blockbuster budget, a mid-tier return, and a hefty financial bruise.

Where it left its mark

The film’s legacy is a study in delayed vindication. Its leads remain proud, arguing the work is better than its reputation. Taylor Kitsch, who has largely returned to television work following his two big-budget failures in 2012, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019 that he learned a lot and does not see it as a failure. Lynn Collins admitted it took time to accept the film’s impact, but she eventually embraced its polarizing nature as valid art. Richard Newby of The Hollywood Reporter argued on the 10th anniversary of the film's release that it changed the industry by proving star power was gone, shifting value toward familiar characters. Stanton, commenting in 2026, simply noted that it found its audience. That is the only metric that really matters.
