What kind of watch this is

Steven Spielberg directs a 124-minute tension machine that runs on the fear of what you cannot see. The ocean becomes a character with a grudge, and the silence between the waves does more work than the dialogue ever will. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss play out their roles with a desperate, salt-crusted urgency that makes the water feel personal. It is less about the shark and more about the town’s collective refusal to look down. Press play if you want your heart to remain in your throat for two hours.

What the critics said

Critics didn’t just like it; they dissected it. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 97% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, while Metacritic assigns an 87 Metascore as of June 2025. Roger Ebert called it "a sensationally effective action picture," noting the scare is more fun because the characters feel human. Pauline Kael saw "the most cheerfully perverse scare movie ever made." Not everyone agreed. Vincent Canby argued the characters are simply functions of the action, like stage hands moving props. He found it fun, but he didn't think it cared about the people inside the machine.

How it did with audiences

It cost $9 million and took in $497 million worldwide, a ratio that turns a modest budget into a very loud argument. In the United States, it earned $286 million. That speed broke records, briefly dethroning The Godfather at the domestic box office. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10. IMDb gives it a weighted average of 8.1/10 as of June 2026. Audiences clearly did the math, then bought the tickets.
