The tagline, "Defy reality," promises a philosophical shift but delivers a lot of running and jumping. It is a film that trusts its audience to fill in the gaps between the explosions. That is a lot to ask of a sequel.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 29% as of November 2024. Metacritic offers a weighted average of 42 out of 100, which it files under mixed or average. The consensus is that Shailene Woodley anchors the chaos. Susan Wloszczyna of RogerEbert.com noted she "almost single-handedly saves these films." Not everyone bought that rescue mission. Richard Corliss of Time argued the plot is "less a sequel than a remake.
How it did with audiences
$297 million worldwide. That is the number that matters, even if it trails the first film’s domestic haul. North America took in $130 million, a dip from the predecessor’s $150 million, but the rest of the world made up the difference. TMDB users rate it 6.4 out of 10.
