What kind of watch this is
Inside No. 9 is a 26-hour anthology where every story fits behind a door marked number 9. Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton write and star in these 53 episodes, which function as standalone short plays. The format is tight: roughly 30 minutes per episode, with the plot concluding before the credits roll. The connection is loose, often just a shoe size or a dressing room number, but the tone is consistent. It tackles heavy subjects like abuse and murder with a dry, comic detachment. Each set also features an ornamental hare, hidden somewhere in the frame. Pemberton notes it has no specific significance, just a visual anchor for the chaos. It is a collection of twists that rely on the audience trusting the writers to pull the rug out from under the genre.
What the critics said
Critics rarely found fault. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 100% score, which is a perfect score that feels almost suspicious for a show about two men and a house. Mark Jones in The Guardian called it "never less-than-captivating," a description that applies to most things that keep you awake until 2 a.m. David Chater in The Times praised the "rich and perverse imaginations" of the writers, noting the acting range that brings the weirdness to life. Some reviewers felt the first three episodes were stronger than the last three, a common complaint for anthology series where the bar keeps rising. It won the Rose d'Or comedy prize and multiple BAFTA nods, proving that strange and memorable can also be commercially viable.
