What kind of watch this is
Inglourious Basterds is a 2009 war drama that plays like a thriller with a violent punch. It runs 153 minutes, a duration that demands patience for its dialogue-heavy buildup before the bloodshed begins. The film is for viewers who appreciate a fictionalized history where the script bends the past to fit its own narrative logic. It is not a documentary, but a stylized exercise in cinematic revenge. If you enjoy watching dialogue do the heavy lifting until it suddenly stops, this is your watch.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports 89% of 332 critics gave the film a positive review, with an average rating of 7.8/10. Metacritic places it at 69 out of 100, a score it files under generally favorable. James Berardinelli called it Tarantino's best since Pulp Fiction. Roger Ebert saw a big, bold war movie. Not everyone was convinced. Christopher Hitchens likened the viewing experience to having warm piss emptied over his head, which is a vivid way to describe a letdown.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $70 million. The worldwide gross hit $321 million. That math clears the hurdle with room to spare. On TMDB, users rate it 8.2 out of 10. IMDb gives it an 8.4 out of 10 as of February 2026.
What came next for the cast
Brad Pitt moved from Se7en to World War Z. Mélanie Laurent traded French independent roles for Now You See Me. Eli Roth kept making genre films, just different kinds. The timeline suggests momentum, but credits do not prove causation. Sometimes a film just happens to land when a career is already rolling.
