What kind of watch this is
Inferno is a 2016 mystery thriller directed by Ron Howard. It runs 122 minutes and follows Robert Langdon, who wakes up in a hospital with amnesia. He teams up with a doctor to stop a deadly global plot before it is too late. The hook is simple: you trust the man with the amnesia, but you do not trust the clock. It is a race where the stakes are the entire species and the only clue is a man who does not know his own name. That is a tall order for a film where the protagonist cannot remember his own breakfast.
What the critics said
The reception was not subtle. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 23% approval rating as of August 2024, an average user score of 4.6/10 from October 2021, and a consensus that calls the film "senselessly frantic and altogether shallow." Metacritic sits at 42 out of 100 as of July 2025, a number that lands in the middle of the road. Mark Kermode called it "intergalactically stupid," a phrase that does the heavy lifting for the rest of the review. CinemaScore audiences were more forgiving, giving it a B+. The critics saw a mess; the audience saw a movie.
How it did with audiences
Inferno spent $75 million and took in $220 million worldwide. That is a return, technically, though the kind that requires a spreadsheet to look like a win. In the US and Canada, it opened to $14.9 million, landing second behind Boo! A Madea Halloween. It was Ron Howard’s fourth straight domestic disappointment. Audiences gave it a 6.1 out of 10 on TMDB, a number that suggests the money was spent, but the magic was mostly left in the editing room.
