What kind of watch this is
Steven Spielberg directs this 1984 adventure, which drops Indiana Jones into India to find a mystical stone for a starving village. He agrees, then stumbles into a secret cult plotting a terrible plan in the catacombs of an ancient palace. The tone is urgent and loud, skipping the archaeological setup of the first film for pure, unbroken momentum. It is 118 minutes of chasing ghosts and dodging traps, with Harrison Ford, Kate Capshaw, and Ke Huy Quan navigating the dark. It asks you to suspend disbelief just long enough to enjoy the ride.
What the critics said
Critics were divided at release, but the dust has settled into a comfortable middle. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 77%, backed by 138 reviews. Metacritic is more cautious, landing on 57 out of 100, which it labels mixed or average. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, coining the term "Bruised Forearm Movie" for the sheer, gripping excitement. Vincent Canby found it "too shapeless," a critique that misses the point of a serial that just goes on and on. The film is a kinetic blur, which is exactly the point.
How it did with audiences
It cost $28 million and took in $333 million worldwide. That’s a healthy margin, though the $180 million North American figure tells a quieter story. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. IMDb users give it 7.5/10 as of March 2026.
