What kind of watch this is

Steven Spielberg directs this 122-minute Cold War adventure, where Harrison Ford’s archaeologist is dragged into a story about a crystal skull. The hook is the mismatch: a man who digs up history is forced to fight Soviet agents who want to weaponize the future. Cate Blanchett plays Irina Spalko, a villain whose sword skills are as out of place as her entire premise. It is a film that leans hard into the absurd, asking you to suspend disbelief for a myth that barely fits the era.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 77% with a 7/10 average, a score that suggests the film did its job. Metacritic is more cautious, landing on 65 out of 100, which it labels generally favorable. The consensus notes the thrills and Ford’s return, even if the plot feels familiar. Roger Ebert gave it three and a half stars, calling it "same old, same old" but admitting he wants "goofy action". Leonard Maltin agreed on the stars, noting Indy returns with the same high adventure. Not everyone smiled. James Berardinelli called it "the most lifeless of the series", a verdict that stings a little.

How it did with audiences

The budget hit $185 million, forcing Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford to skip upfront salaries so Paramount could cover the costs. The film needed to clear $400 million for the studio to book a profit beyond its distribution fee. It took in $317 million in the United States and $791 million worldwide. Audiences voted it a 6 on TMDB.
