Critics leaned heavily toward praise. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 91% as of November 2024, while Metacritic lands on 80/100 in February 2026. The consensus notes the film is messy and overlong, yet its emotional impact carries the weight. Peter Howell of The Toronto Star called it "a commanding film of multiple revelations." Leonard Maltin found it "tough, spellbinding." Not everyone bought the trip. Martin Morrow of CBC News argued the adaptation stripped away the source material's texture. It is a heavy watch that leaves you counting the coincidences on your fingers.
How it did with audiences
A $7 million budget against $16 million in worldwide receipts makes for a tidy profit margin, though the U.S. leg only pulled in $7 million. On TMDB, users rate it 8.1 out of 10. IMDb has it at 8.3 as of February 2026.
What came next for the cast
Lubna Azabal had already navigated tense roles in Body of Lies and Paradise Now. Incendies sat between those early credits and a later stretch that included Mary Magdalene and the Coriolanus remake. Rémy Girard came in with a comedy turn in Blades of Glory and a classic in The Red Violin. What followed for him was quieter, capped by a role in Frontier.
