In the not-too-distant future, the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. What kind of watch this is

Andrew Niccol returns to the near future in this 2011 sci-fi thriller. He swaps the usual cybernetic upgrades for a biological clock, making time itself the currency. The rich hoard decades; the poor spend seconds just to stay alive. It is a tight 109 minutes of running out of time, literally. The stakes are not metaphorical. You cannot pay a debt with a promise when your biological clock is ticking down to zero.

What the critics said

Critics found the idea sharp but the execution dull. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 37% as of March 2024, with an average score of 5.3. Metacritic lands on 53 out of 100. Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun-Times called the premise "damnably intriguing," though he noted the story was built from standard parts. Henry Barnes of The Guardian found the allegory clunky, yet admitted it ticks along on the strength of its cast. Not everyone bought the social critique. Noah Berlatsky argued the film makes inequality sexy rather than dismantling the system.

How it did with audiences

In Time cost $40 million and returned $174 million worldwide. That is a healthy profit for a studio, and a respectable number for anyone who liked the idea of trading life for currency. It opened at number three, sitting behind Puss in Boots and Paranormal Activity 3. The audience sent it there. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. People watched it, and they gave it a decent score.

What came next for the cast

Cillian Murphy went from Inception to The Dark Knight Rises. Justin Timberlake swapped The Social Network for Inside Llewyn Davis. Amanda Seyfried traded Mamma Mia! for A Million Ways to Die in the West. The credits do not say the film changed their careers. They just say what came next.
