Metacritic’s weighted average sits at 59, a score it classifies as mixed or average. Audiences, however, were more forgiving, giving it an A− on CinemaScore. The consensus suggests it is a summer blockbuster that makes viewers think, if only a little. Richard Roeper called it "a slick, consistently entertaining thrill ride," while Kim Newman noted it has "a brain as well as muscles." Not everyone bought in. Roger Ebert found the plot simple-minded, and Todd McCarthy labeled it a failure of imagination.
How it did with audiences
A $120 million budget met a $353 million worldwide haul, a solid return that landed it as the eleventh-highest-grossing film of 2004. In North America, it opened to $52.2 million, finishing first at the box office, before collecting $144.8 million across the region. The rest of the world added another $202.4 million, proving the robot uprising had global appeal. On TMDB, users give it a 7 out of 10. The math works out, even if the robots didn't.
What came next for the cast
Will Smith arrived as the face of the Men in Black franchise and left it to headline I Am Legend. James Cromwell moved from the weight of The Green Mile to Spider-Man 3. Bridget Moynahan swapped romantic comedies for Lord of War and later the John Wick series. Alan Tudyk drifted from Patch Adams into Rogue One. The credits do not claim the robot caused the pivot. They just list what came after.
