What kind of watch this is
I Am Not Okay with This is a 2020 drama-comedy that treats high school social anxiety as a precursor to literal destruction. Created by Christy Hall and Jonathan Entwistle, the series follows Sydney Novak, a teenager whose unrequited crush on her best friend Stanley Barber collides with her inability to control her emerging powers. The tone balances dry, observational humor with genuine psychological tension. It does not ask for patience; it asks for attention.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes assigns an 87% approval rating based on 67 reviews, averaging 6.82 out of 10. The consensus calls the series awkward and charming, noting that while it sometimes veers into shallow territory, Sophia Lillis keeps it afloat. Metacritic scores it 68 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews. The 2020 Harvey Awards nominated it for Best Adaptation from Comic Book/Graphic Novel.
How it did with audiences
It skipped the box office report entirely, so the only number that matters is the one you can see on your screen. TMDB users gave it an 8 out of 10, a mark that suggests people who watched it liked what they saw enough to hit the button. No ticket sales to argue with, just a solid score from the people who actually sat through the weirdness.
What came next for the cast
Sophia Lillis traded two It entries for Dungeons & Dragons and Asteroid City. Wyatt Oleff moved from Guardians of the Galaxy to Karate Kid: Legends. Kathleen Rose Perkins went from Gone Girl to Big Shot. The credits do not prove the show caused these shifts. They merely record what followed.
