What kind of watch this is
Dean DeBlois directs this 102-minute sequel, which trades the structured lessons of the first film for open skies. Hiccup and Toothless leave their island home to map the wild, only to stumble upon a hidden sanctuary and a rider who complicates everything. The tone shifts from cute to consequential, as Hiccup must actually lead rather than just bond. It is a bigger canvas with higher stakes, asking how much one person can carry when the whole world starts burning. The stakes feel real because the friendship does the heavy lifting.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed this sequel earned its spot. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 92% approval rating from 184 reviews, averaging 7.8 out of 10. Metacritic settles on 77 out of 100, which signals generally favorable reception. Peter Debruge of Variety called it DreamWorks' strongest sequel yet, noting it breathes fresh fire into the franchise. Joe McGovern of Entertainment Weekly gave it a B, admitting the flight path needs straightening but confirming the franchise knows how to fly. The consensus praises its emotional resonance and animation. It builds on the first film's success rather than rehashing it.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $145 million. The worldwide gross hit $622 million, with $177 million coming from the United States. That math leaves a reported profit of $107.3 million, according to Deadline Hollywood. It finished as the second-highest-grossing animated film of 2014, trailing only Big Hero 6. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Cate Blanchett arrived after The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and left for Thor: Ragnarok. Gerard Butler stepped in from Olympus Has Fallen and walked out toward Geostorm. Jay Baruchel, fresh from Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, drifted into BlackBerry. The timeline suggests a shift, but careers rarely obey the logic of a single role. It is a long corridor with interesting doors.
