What kind of watch this is

Dean DeBlois returns to Berk for a live-action adventure that runs 125 minutes. The premise is familiar: a boy, a dragon, and a society built on fear. What keeps it grounded is the weight of that tradition. Hiccup does not just fly; he dismantles a centuries-old enemy relationship. It asks if you can forgive a creature for its nature. It is a film about the cost of peace, told with the stakes of war.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 78% positive, based on 259 reviews as of October 2026. Metacritic is cooler, landing on 61 out of 100 from 43 critics in January 2026. That split suggests a film that works but doesn’t quite spark. Brandon Yu of The New York Times found it "exhilarating at times, if somewhat mechanical." Helen O’Hara of Empire wanted more originality, noting the film shows "far too much deference to its progenitor." It’s a remake that loves its source material a little too much.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $150 million. The worldwide take hit $371 million. In the United States, it pulled in $172 million. That is a healthy margin for a studio film, assuming the accounting ignores the cost of training dragons. On TMDB, users rate it 7.9 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Gerard Butler arrived from the action-adjacent orbits of 300 and Olympus Has Fallen, then headed straight for Greenland 2: Migration. Nick Frost, fresh off the zombie and police comedy duo of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, moved into Whistle. The credits list what happened next, not why. Timing is a cruel editor.
