The critics were lukewarm, to put it mildly. Rotten Tomatoes sits at a 42% approval rating as of November 2024, an average score of 5.1 out of 10. Metacritic lands lower, at 45 out of 100, based on 31 critics. The consensus acknowledges the chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, but finds it insufficient to save the predictable script. Audiences, however, gave it an A-, which suggests the math doesn't always match the mood.
How it did with audiences
The film opened on February 7, 2003, pulling in $23.8 million over its first weekend. It finished with a domestic gross of $105.8 million and $71.7 million internationally, totaling $177.5 million worldwide. That is a healthy return against a $60 million production budget. By December 2003, video sales had added another $67.2 million from 3.79 million copies. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10.
