What kind of watch this is
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania is a 2022 animated comedy where a scientific accident swaps the bodies of a vampire and a human. Drac becomes a person, and Johnny becomes a monster. They spend 92 minutes trying to fix it while driving each other up the wall. Directed by Derek Drymon, the film relies on Andy Samberg’s exasperated energy and Selena Gomez’s deadpan reactions. The central joke is simple: being human is inconvenient, and being a monster is terrifying. It is a bright, loud adventure that treats identity as a temporary costume. The tagline says change can be scary. The movie agrees, then immediately makes a fool of it.
What the critics said
The critics found it dull. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 49% as of September 2023, while Metacritic scores it 46 out of 100 as of March 2025. The consensus calls it middling family viewing, relatively painless but uninspired. Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting noted it "never really rising above a wholesome, exuberant amusement ride." Tomris Laffly of Variety called it "yet another wearisome tale." John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter found it "sufficiently goofy-sweet.
How it did with audiences
The box office ledger for Hotel Transylvania: Transformania is conspicuously empty. No budget, no take, no numbers to parse. So we look at the TMDB user score: a 7 out of 10. That is a solid, unglamorous mark. It suggests the audience watched, nodded, and moved on to the next thing. A quiet reception for a movie that just wanted to hug you.
