One special weekend, Dracula has invited all his best friends to celebrate his beloved daughter Mavis's 118th birthday. For Dracula catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem but the party really starts when one ordinary guy stumbles into the hotel and changes everything!

Hotel Transylvania is a 2012 animated comedy that takes the classic "fish out of water" trope and swaps the fish for a vampire. The hook is simple: Dracula builds a resort specifically to keep humans away, then a human stumbles in. It runs 91 minutes, a tight timeframe for a monster family to descend into chaos.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes puts the film at 45%, a figure that suggests the movie is a bit too loud for the critics it is trying to please. The consensus notes the giddy tone may please children, but the script feels thin for older audiences. Metacritic agrees, landing on 47 out of 100. It is a mixed bag, which is exactly what you expect from a movie where a vampire runs a resort.
IGN’s Geoff Chapman was less concerned with depth, giving it a 9 out of 10 and calling it a romp. He argued that while the story is predictable, the characters are lovable. It is a film that checks the box for family fun, even if the plot is as predictable as a hotel check-in.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $85 million, though Deadline Hollywood claimed it actually cost $104 million. It returned $358.4 million worldwide. That is a healthy margin for a monster comedy. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. Sony’s distribution president called the performance "beyond anyone's imagination." The sequel later broke its opening weekend record.
