What kind of watch this is

Wright’s Hot Fuzz (2007) is a 121-minute action-comedy about a London cop who gets transferred to a quiet village. He expects boredom. He gets a partner who treats policing like a hobby and a town that hides its sins under layers of polite small talk. The film leans into the absurdity of bureaucratic incompetence before it pivots hard into genuine violence. It is 121 minutes long, which is just enough time to realize that the village’s charm is a trap.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 91% approval, based on 204 reviews as of October 2024. The consensus calls it a bitingly satiric and hugely entertaining parody. Metacritic gives it 81 out of 100, which it files under universal acclaim. Olly Richards of Empire noted the leads feel no need to fight for the punchline. Philip French of The Observer warmed to the comedy team. Not everyone agreed. Anthony Quinn of The Independent said the impish spirit had been fatally indulged. The Daily Mirror gave it 2 out of 5, noting many jokes miss their target.

How it did with audiences

The production cost $16 million and pulled in $81 million worldwide, which is a solid return for a film about a police officer who turns out to be a bit too intense for his own good. In the US, it opened to $24 million, with a first-weekend gross of $5.8 million from 825 cinemas. That per-cinema average was the highest of any top-ten film that week, a statistical anomaly that suggests people actually wanted to see it. On TMDB, users give it a 7.6. The numbers are decent, but the cult following is the real profit center.

What came next for the cast

Pegg shifted from zombie comedies to the Star Wars franchise. Frost stuck with the zombie genre, eventually landing in Snow White and the Huntsman. Broadbent moved from Narnia to Indiana Jones. Considine went from Dead Man’s Shoes to House of the Dragon. These trajectories do not prove Hot Fuzz caused the shift. They just show where the road led.
