What kind of watch this is

Steven Spielberg directs a 142-minute adventure where a corporate lawyer named Peter Banning forgets how to fly. Robin Williams plays the tired executive, while Dustin Hoffman takes on the role of Captain Hook. The plot hinges on a vengeful pirate kidnapping Peter’s children to force him back to Neverland. Julia Roberts appears as Tinkerbell. It is a family film. The tone balances whimsy with genuine peril. It asks what happens when the boy who never grew up finally does. That question drives the entire runtime.

What the critics said

Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 37% approval rating as of January 2026, with an average user rating of 4.7/10. Metacritic assigns a 52/100 Metascore, landing in the mixed or average range. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times argued the screenplay offers "nothing more than a hook on which to hang a new version of the Peter Pan story." He felt the film failed to re-imagine the material with anything fresh or urgent. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone added that it would "only appeal to the baby boomer generation." The consensus notes Spielberg directs on autopilot, giving in too quickly to sentimental, syrupy qualities. One dry note: the visual look was lively, even if the heart was elsewhere.

How it did with audiences

It cost $70 million and took $301 million worldwide, a figure that secured a $50 million profit for the studio. Yet the studio called it a financial disappointment, largely because Disney’s Beauty and the Beast stole the spotlight. In North America, it opened with $13.5 million and finished at $119.7 million, while foreign markets added $181.2 million. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10. It made real money, but the mood was off.

What came next for the cast

Julia Roberts arrived from Pretty Woman and left for Ocean’s Eleven. Bob Hoskins, fresh off Brazil, later donned a hunter’s coat in Snow White and the Huntsman. Dustin Hoffman pivoted from Rain Man to Meet the Fockers. The timeline suggests momentum, not causation. Credits mark paths; they do not draw arrows.
