What kind of watch this is

Home Alone is a 1990 comedy about a kid left behind in a house full of things that can hurt people. Chris Columbus directs Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, who decides the best defense is a very elaborate offense. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern play the thieves who walk into that trap. The film runs 103 minutes, which is exactly long enough for one family to forget a child and for that child to rebuild his entire living room into a hazard zone. It is a story about the specific, terrifying freedom of being eight and unmonitored.

What the critics said

Critics were divided, though rarely with conviction. Rotten Tomatoes records a 67% approval rating as of November 2022, while Metacritic assigns a 63 out of 100 Metascore as of June 2025, which it labels generally favorable. The consensus leans on Macaulay Culkin’s charm to save a premise that stretches thin. Caryn James of The New York Times found the first half "flat and unsurprising," yet admitted the slapstick in the second half worked. Roger Ebert gave it 2.5 stars, noting the traps required a budget no 8-year-old possesses. He praised Culkin but doubted the plot’s plausibility. Owen Gleiberman gave it a "D," finding the adult-bashing sadistic. The audience, polled by CinemaScore, simply gave it an "A.

How it did with audiences

It cost $18 million and took $477 million worldwide, a spread that defines a blockbuster in any language. The domestic haul was $286 million, enough to make it the top-grossing film of its year in North America. It sat at number one for 12 consecutive weeks, a run that ended when Sleeping with the Enemy opened.

What came next for the cast

Macaulay Culkin stepped from Uncle Buck into a brand of child stardom that defined a decade, before pivoting to American Horror Story and Ri¢hie Ri¢h. Joe Pesci, fresh from the gravity of Once Upon a Time in America, returned for the sequel and later found new life in The Irishman. Daniel Stern moved from the quiet drama of The Wonder Years to Whip It, while John Heard shifted from After Hours to Prison Break. The credits trace a path from indie grit to franchise fame and back again, though they cannot prove the holiday classic caused the pivot.
