What kind of watch this is
Drew Goddard built a procedural around the friction between intuition and procedure. Morgan Gillory is a cleaner with an IQ of 160 who gets pulled into Major Crimes because she notices what the detectives miss. Her partner, Detective Adam Karadec, follows the manual to the letter. The clash is the engine. It is not a cozy mystery, and it is not a grim procedural. It is a study in how two people solve the same puzzle from opposite ends. The series runs 3 seasons and 32 episodes. That is roughly 23 hours of watching a by-the-book cop slowly lose his mind to a cleaner’s logic.
What the critics said
Critics landed on a comfortable middle ground. Rotten Tomatoes gives the first season a 96% approval rating from 25 reviews. Metacritic scores it 72 out of 100, a generally favorable mark. The consensus calls it a solid procedural with plenty of upside, thanks to Kaitlin Olson’s spiky personality.
Aramide Tinubu of Variety called it a "perfectly adequate" watch, noting the premise offers a unique spin. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter was less certain, finding the pilot’s exposition "off-putting." He argued the show struggles to define how much Morgan’s genius actually helps solve cases. It is a safe bet, mostly because of the star.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, users rate High Potential 8.3 out of 10. The numbers tell a different story than the airwaves. Its premiere pulled in 11.5 million viewers across platforms within three days. That jump of 220% from the initial ABC broadcast suggests audiences didn’t wait for the next week to finish the story. It became the most-watched new series on ABC in six years. The October 22 episode reached 10.49 million viewers when streaming data was added. A quiet dominance, really.
