What kind of watch this is

Theodore Melfi’s 2016 drama runs 127 minutes, a length that feels just right for a story about doing math in a room full of men who pretend not to hear you. It skips the usual heavy-handed tragedy, opting instead for the quiet, grinding frustration of being brilliant in a place that refuses to see you. The film finds its rhythm in the small victories, the way a single correct calculation can outshine a hundred loud speeches. It is less a shout and more a steady, unshakeable presence. You will not leave feeling like you watched a spectacle. You will leave feeling like you watched someone finally get the right answer.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 93% approval rating as of August 2024, with an average score of 7.6/10. Metacritic lands on 74 out of 100, a score it labels generally favorable. The consensus calls it heartwarming and crowd-pleasing, which is high praise for a film about math. Simon Thompson of IGN rated it 9 out of 10, noting it fills a blank in US history in a classy way. Not everyone bought the charm. Tim Grierson of Screen International found the depiction of sexism and racism almost patronisingly earnest. Jesse Hassenger at The A.V. Club argued that a lack of surprise is in the movie's bones. It is a feel-good film that works best when you stop asking where the nuance went.

How it did with audiences

The $25 million budget turned into $236 million worldwide, a return that film accountants call a hit and everyone else calls a miracle. Domestically, it pulled in $170 million, which made it the highest-grossing Best Picture nominee at the 89th Academy Awards. Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit at $95.55 million, placing it in the top 20 most profitable releases of 2016. On TMDB, users rate it 8.1 out of 10. The math worked out, which is rarer than you’d think.

What came next for the cast

Kevin Costner moved from Man of Steel to Yellowstone, a shift that feels less like a career change and more like a genre correction. Octavia Spencer stepped out of Snowpiercer and into The Shape of Water. Taraji P. Henson swapped The Karate Kid for Proud Mary. The timeline suggests momentum, but correlation is not causation. Sometimes a role is just a door, and you have to walk through it to see where it leads.
