What kind of watch this is
Scott Beck directs this 2024 thriller, which runs 111 minutes. Hugh Grant plays Mr. Reed, a man who invites two young missionaries in and turns their faith into a puzzle. The film is a cat-and-mouse game where the guest becomes the hunter. It asks you to question everything, including the person holding the coffee. That is a heavy burden for a Tuesday night.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes tallies 90% positive reviews from 291 critics, averaging 7.3 out of 10. Metacritic settles on 71, a score that lands in the "generally favorable" zone. The consensus highlights Hugh Grant’s turn, noting the film prefers cerebral chills to cheap shocks. Brian Tallerico calls it "a marvelous blend of religious history and sociopathic behavior". Peter Bradshaw finds it "gruesome and bizarre and preposterous", though he enjoys watching Grant be "suave, dapper and evil". It’s a horror movie that keeps the audience guessing, or at least keeps them talking.
How it did with audiences
Heretic cost $10 million and took in $59 million worldwide. That is a solid return, assuming the accounting department is feeling generous. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. The opening weekend earned $11 million, placing it second behind Venom: The Last Dance. It dropped 54.1% the following week. Audiences liked it enough to keep it alive, but not enough to make it a phenomenon.
What came next for the cast
Sophie Thatcher moved from The Boogeyman to Companion. Chloe East stepped away from The Fabelmans for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Hugh Grant returned from Love Actually to Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Topher Grace followed Interstellar with Flight Risk and How to Make a Killing. The credits list the titles, not the reasons.
