What kind of watch this is

Hercules is a 1997 animated adventure where a young mortal seeks his father’s approval. It runs 93 minutes, a tight timeframe for a myth that usually sprawls. The film treats its source material with a wink, swapping epic tragedy for pop-culture references and a boss fight that feels more like a corporate merger. Hades is the villain here, a hotheaded trickster plotting to seize Mount Olympus. He is funny, loud, and dangerously ambitious. The animation is bright and kinetic, carrying the weight of the story on its shoulders. It is a movie that knows it is a movie, leaning into the absurdity of a god complex. It does not take itself too seriously, which is exactly the point.

What the critics said

Critics generally liked it. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 83% approval rating from 113 reviews as of January 2026, while Metacritic assigns a 74/100 Metascore from 22 critics. The consensus notes it is fast-paced and fun, even if it does not match Disney’s true classics. Franklin Foer observed that most reviewers praised the film for breaking from the standard musical-comedy formula. James Woods drew universal acclaim for voicing Hades. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly called it "an inspired piece of deadpan vaudeville." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times agreed, noting Woods brings "something of the same verbal inventiveness that Robin Williams brought to Aladdin." The Scarfe-inspired animation style drew mixed reactions, with some critics finding the visuals rushed.

How it did with audiences

It cost $85 million and took $253 million worldwide, with $99 million of that landing in the United States. Wall Street analysts had predicted $125 to $150 million domestic, betting on the Aladdin vibe. The film missed those marks, which cost Disney shareholders 9.7% in stock value. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. The arithmetic worked out, even if the boardroom didn’t like the math.

What came next for the cast

Tate Donovan moved from Friends and Memphis Belle to Argo and Manchester by the Sea. The credits do not say Hercules caused that shift. They simply mark the time. Danny DeVito came from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Batman Returns, then went on to Big Fish and Jumanji: The Next Level.
