What kind of watch this is

Mel Gibson directs this 139-minute drama about Desmond Doss, a medic in the Battle of Okinawa who refused to kill. He became the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. The film leans into that refusal, framing a man’s absolute limit against the total war around him. It is a loud, unflinching look at how one person’s conscience holds up when everyone else is letting go. The tagline says it best: one of America’s greatest heroes never fired a bullet.

What the critics said

The scores land in the comfortable middle. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 84% approval rating based on 282 reviews, with an average of 7.30 out of 10. Metacritic’s weighted average sits at 71 out of 100. The consensus leans toward praise, though not unanimity. Mick LaSalle of SFGate called it "a brilliant return for Mel Gibson". The Daily Telegraph gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Audiences polled by CinemaScore awarded it an "A".

How it did with audiences

The budget was $40 million, not the $45 million often cited in quick summaries. Against that, the film grossed $67 million in the United States and $181 million worldwide. That is a solid return, though not the windfall some expected when it opened against Doctor Strange and Trolls. On TMDB, users give it a score of 8.2 out of 10.

Awards

The film took home 12 awards from 18 nominations. John Gilbert won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing and the AACTA Award for Best Editing, while Kevin O'Connell won the Academy Award for Best Sound. Mel Gibson won the AACTA Award for Best Direction, and Andrew Garfield won the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. It also landed a spot on the National Board of Review's Top Ten. A solid haul for a war movie that mostly takes place indoors.

What came next for the cast

Garfield traded one Spider-Man for another, with a musical and an indie mystery in between. Worthington returned to Pandora, giving the franchise a long lease on his life. Vaughn, who had been in Smith and Into the Wild, pivoted toward comedy and prison brawls. Palmer moved from zombies to witches and eventually to action. The credits list what happened after. They cannot prove the war film did it.
