What kind of watch this is

Groundhog Day is a 1993 fantasy comedy about a cynical weatherman who relives the same day until he gets it right. Harold Ramis directs Bill Murray as Phil, a man so thoroughly bored by his own life that eternity feels like a minor inconvenience. The hook is simple: a bad day, repeated. What makes it work is the slow shift from annoyance to genuine curiosity. Phil stops trying to escape the loop and starts living inside it. It is a precise study of how boredom looks when you have all the time in the world.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes holds a 93% Tomatometer score as of June 2026. Metacritic sits lower at 72, a gap that usually signals a film with strong bones but shaky joints. Kenneth Turan saw a "gentle, endearing" picture, while Hal Hinson called it the best American comedy since Tootsie. Not everyone agreed. Desson Thomson argued it deteriorated into a morality tale, a fair point if you count the ending as a sermon.

How it did with audiences

Groundhog Day cost $15 million to make and took in $71 million domestically, a figure that signals a strong return without breaking any records. Worldwide, the total reached $105 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. The numbers suggest audiences liked the premise enough to keep showing up, even if the calendar never actually moved.

Awards

Groundhog Day collected 6 awards from 4 nominations. Harold Ramis and Danny Rubin took the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay. The film also won at the British Comedy Awards, MTV Movie & TV Awards, and BMI. The Saturn Awards gave the Best Actress trophy to MacDowell. The Academy, despite a videotape campaign, gave it nothing.

What came next for the cast

Bill Murray traded Ghostbusters for Lost in Translation and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Andie MacDowell moved from sex, lies, and videotape to Four Weddings and a Funeral. Chris Elliott went from Manhunter to How I Met Your Mother. The credits list these shifts. They do not prove the film caused them. Sometimes a career just takes a left turn while the actor is looking the other way.

Where it left its mark

Paste called it a mythic pop cultural touchstone in 2020, a status reserved for few. For Bill Murray, the role shifted perception from comedian to broad-ranged actor and credible romantic lead. That pivot paved the way for serious turns like Rushmore and Lost in Translation.

The film also changed the careers of its makers. Harold Ramis gained credibility as a director, leading to Multiplicity and Analyze This. The real towns of Woodstock and Punxsutawney now host festivals, with the latter drawing tens of thousands of visitors. Residents still focus on the groundhog, though.
