It is a film that takes the mechanics of its own mythology very seriously, even if the universe it builds feels like a borrowed toy.
What the critics said
Critics did not exactly flock to the premiere. Rotten Tomatoes records a 25% approval rating based on 248 reviews as of January 2025, while Metacritic assigns a 39/100 Metascore from 39 critics, landing in the "generally unfavorable" territory. The consensus leans toward "noisy, overproduced, and thinly written." Not every critic shared the sentiment, though. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter found it "serves up all the requisite elements with enough self-deprecating humor." He saw a film that knows its own weight.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $200 million, and the worldwide gross landed at $220 million. That is a tight margin for a superhero tentpole, though the notes suggest the studio wanted closer to $500 million to feel comfortable. North America took in $117 million, with the rest of the world adding the remainder. On TMDB, users rate it 5.2 out of 10. Audiences saw the green light, then dimmed it.
