Inspired by a True Friendship.

Tony Lip, a bouncer in 1962, is hired to drive pianist Don Shirley on a tour through the Deep South in the days when African Americans, forced to find alternate accommodations and services due to segregation laws below the Mason-Dixon Line, relied on a guide called The Negro Motorist Green Book.

What kind of watch this is

Peter Farrelly directs a 130-minute drama-comedy about a bouncer and a pianist taking a road trip through the segregated Deep South in 1962. The hook is the friction between their worlds. One knows how to punch; the other knows how to play Chopin. They share a car and a green book, which tells Black travelers where they are safe and where they are not. The film leans on their clashing styles to explore a history that still stings. It is a warm, if slightly sanitized, look at friendship forming under pressure.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 77% as of November 2022, while Metacritic lands on 69 out of 100 as of June 2025. That is a solid, if slightly frayed, consensus. Mick LaSalle of The San Francisco Chronicle argued the film acquires a glow by the end. Steve Pond of TheWrap noted the journey gets darker, yet the characters remain compelling. Not everyone was charmed. Salon accused the film of relying on a white savior trope. Director Peter Farrelly pushed back, claiming the story is about two people pulling each other up. That is a specific defense for a specific charge.

How it did with audiences

It cost $23 million and took $322 million worldwide, a margin that suggests the audience did the math before the studio did. On TMDB, users rate it 8.2 out of 10. The opening weekend was quiet, but word-of-mouth carried it through the holidays.

Awards

The 91st Academy Awards gave it 3 wins from 5 nominations. It took Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay for Nick Vallelonga, and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. The National Board of Review also named it Best Film. That makes it the 5th film to win Best Picture without a Best Director nomination, a distinction that usually requires a bit more effort.
