What kind of watch this is

Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this 2008 drama, playing Walt Kowalski, a Korean War veteran who sets out to reform his neighbor, Thao, a Hmong teenager who tried to steal Kowalski's prized possession: a 1972 Gran Torino. That theft is the inciting incident, but the film is really about a grumpy man deciding to protect a family he initially despises. It runs 116 minutes, a duration that feels like a long, uncomfortable sit in a garage while someone else cleans your car. Eastwood plays the role with a stillness that makes every outburst feel like a structural failure. The tagline is "Get off my lawn," which is technically accurate, though the movie does a lot more than that.

What the critics said

Critics landed on a solid majority, though not a unanimous one. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 81% positive rating as of January 2026, with an average score of 7.1 out of 10. Metacritic, more restrained, sits at 72 out of 100 based on 34 reviews. The New York Times called it "a sleek, muscle car of a movie made in the USA, in that industrial graveyard called Detroit." Kenneth Turan noted that Eastwood’s performance makes the title role impossible to imagine without him. It is a film that trusts its own weight, which is rarer than it should be.

How it did with audiences

A $33 million budget is a modest number. $148 million in the United States is a strong one. $270 million worldwide makes the whole thing a financial home run. On TMDB, users rate it 8 out of 10. Audiences did the math before the accountants did.
