What kind of watch this is
Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz built a fishbowl on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The tagline says you are nobody until you are talked about, and the show takes that literally. An anonymous blogger narrates every scandal, turning private heartbreak into public entertainment. The characters spend their time trying to unmask the source while feeding it more drama. It runs 83 hours across 6 seasons and 121 episodes. That is a long time to watch people perform their own destruction.
What the critics said
Critics warmed up slowly. The pilot earned a 59 on Metacritic from 40 publications, a polite nod for a guilty pleasure rather than essential viewing. Janet Malcolm of The New Yorker called the early episodes "sluggish and crass," a move from Barneys to Kmart. By the second season, the score climbed to 71. Entertainment Weekly awarded it an "A," noting that "Summer's been good to this girl." New York magazine later named it the greatest teen drama of all time, praising its ability to satirize wealth.
How it did with audiences
The series premiere drew 3.50 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among Adults 18–49, placing it last in its Wednesday night timeslot. Yet it held better audience retention than America's Next Top Model. A 2008 WGA strike rerun pushed the season finale to 3.00 million. Viewership generally slid thereafter, hitting a low of 0.76 million in season six. The finale rebounded to 1.55 million. On TMDB, users rate it 8.1 out of 10.
