What kind of watch this is

Gone with the Wind is a 1939 drama that treats the Civil War as a backdrop for a character who refuses to grow up. It runs 238 minutes, a duration that tests your patience before it earns your respect. The romance at its center is less about love and more about two people stubbornly circling each other. You do not need to know the ending to appreciate the scale of the production. It is for anyone who has ever waited for a story to justify its own length.

What the critics said

Critics generally agreed the production was massive, even if the drama wasn't. Variety called it "a great picture poised for grosses which may be second to none in the history of the business." Frank S. Nugent of The New York Times was more reserved, calling it an "interesting story beautifully told" while questioning if it was the greatest ever made. The scores back that up. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 90% Tomatometer score as of November 2022, and Metacritic landed on a 97 out of 100 in June 2025. The main complaint was length. The Manchester Guardian felt the second half was superfluous.

How it did with audiences

The film took in $402 million worldwide, a figure that has aged surprisingly well given the changing cost of a ticket. On TMDB, users rate it 7.9 out of 10. IMDb lists an 8.2/10 score as of February 2026. The receipts were strong, and the ratings remain high. Few things from that era have kept both.

Awards

The 1940 ceremony handed out 9 of its 13 nominations to this film. Vivien Leigh took Best Actress, Hattie McDaniel took Best Supporting Actress, and Victor Fleming took Best Director. Lyle R. Wheeler, Hal C. Kern, Sidney Howard, and Ernest Haller rounded out the winners. The National Board of Review also ranked it in their Top Ten. That is a lot of hardware for one movie.

What came next for the cast

Clark Gable arrived from It Happened One Night and Mutiny on the Bounty, only to vanish for years before returning in The Misfits. Olivia de Havilland stepped out of The Adventures of Robin Hood and did not resurface until Airport '77. The gap between those credits is where the rest of their lives happened. Time moves differently for actors.
